Memorial Weekend Fishing
Monday, May 25, 2009

On a beautiful sunny day Brad caught this nice 26 1/2" walleye while fishing with pro guide Charlie Worrath of MN Fishing Pros.
Walleye fishing has remained strong over the weekend as well as perch and pike. Crappie have still remained scarce but given the rise in water temps we should see them soon.
From my perspective I would say this is one of the better fishing Memorial Weekends we have seen in a few years. Labels: Memorial Weekend Fishing

Memorial Weekend
Friday, May 22, 2009

Jeff and Mack, on their first fishing trip to Sand Lake, accompanied by pro guide Jason Boser of MN Fishing Pros had a terrific few hours. A limit of walleye with a bonus of nice perch and several pike gave them the excitement they were looking for. The best part of the day was Mack outfished the others, yes, that includes their guide. Second Week of 2009 Season
Sunday, May 17, 2009

After an absolutely terrible weekend of weather keeping most in their cabins for 2 days we are having a wonderful Sunday after a few nice hours on Saturday evening. Last night the crappies finally showed up while the walleye bite stayed strong. As an added bonus we are also seeing nice sized perch being caught. Most walleye are still being caught in the 8 to 12 feet range but are seeing a decent amount caught in 16 to 20 feet. Several groups reported today that shiners and rainbows are productive but can't get a bite on a fathead! Go figure? A couple did try leeches with some success but not more productive than jig and minnows. Labels: Second Week of 2009 Season

Northern Pike Limits On Sand Lake

Just wanted to remind everyone that the pike limits on Sand Lake are not the normal state standards. ALL 22" to 36" pike must immediately be returned to the lake however, your possession limit is 9 instead of the statewide 3. We do ask that you keep your nine pike as this must be a unified effort to improve the walleye, perch and crappie survival rates. Sand Lake is loaded with 17" to 22" pike and a 19" pike typically won't eat a 19" pike but it sure will eat smaller walleye, perch and crappie. So, by imposing a slot we are trying to not only improve the quality of pike caught but also create size variances so larger pike may eat smaller pike. By raising the possession limit from 3 to 9 we are allowing those who want to keep pike the ability to do so while helping other species in the lake. If you typically do not keep pike because you are unfamiliar with getting the "Y" bones out please view the video on our website on the fishing page. Also, there are many ways to enjoy pike. Dani and I will trade you a walleye for a pike out of Sand Lake anyday. We really enjoy the pike meat from this lake. Have you tried to boil the meat in Sprite or 7up? How about pike patties on the grill? Send us an email or give us a call and we will be happy to discuss different ways of cooking pike. The moral of this story is we have tried to set an experimental regulation in conjunction with the DNR to not only help improve the fishing as a whole on Sand Lake but to give the angler a rare and special opportunity to enjoy pike from Sand. However, for this to work we need the assistance of everyone! Keep Your 9 Pike! Please! Labels: Northern Pike Limits on Sand Lake

Area Lakes - Round Lake
Wednesday, May 13, 2009

On Wednesday after opener 2009 I went fishing with Charlie Worrath as I do every year. We fish a different lake each year as I try to test his "professional guide" status. This year we fished Round Lake in Squaw Lake Minnesota. I have never been on this lake and even though the wind was blowing at 30mph we had a good day. We kept our 12 eyes and returned 18 within the slot to accompany the 2 large perch and 14 pike kept with 16 pike returned due to their slot as well. This is a shallow lake with little structure but when it is hot it is a lot of fun! We were on the water from 9am to12:45pm and caught the above mentioned 60 fish. Fun Day! 2009 Fishing Opener - Day Before
Sunday, May 10, 2009

Many ventured up north prior to the walleye fishing opener in search of crappie and gills and they were not disappointed. Smaller lakes in the area produced many limits of these species and provided a fishing opener - day before "bonus"! Labels: 2009 Fishing Opener - Day Before

Walleye Fishing Opener 2009

The 2009 walleye fishing opener proved to be another good year for Sand Lake. Most were very satisfied with the lakes production of quality walleye capped off with some nice perch as well. Walleye size ranged from 13" to 28" with the majority being in the 16" to 20" range. The kept perch were in the 12" to 14" range. Although there were a few complaints about the cold weather it turned out to be another great weekend. Remember, the 2010 opener is a week later so not only should the outside temp be warmer but the lake should be as well.
